My horoscope

From Cosmopolitan, February 1978 (yes, the month I was born)

Pisces

Sexy cosmic winds fan passions this month and bring Pisces a luscious new romance! But watch out, Pisces in love can be so dreamy she'll fall behind at work, just when opportunities are beckoning the alert. By the 14th, you simply must get your daydreams under control and not miss a short but rewarding trip (being born?). The continuance of a relationship important to you may depend on it. By the 20th, work life gets so erratic you may have to fight to get-or keep-a career spot. Rely on famed Piscean calm to work your way through this crisis, then enjoy financial and emotional bonanzas as the full moon and generous Mercury swing into your sign on the 22nd. With Mercury (home and marriage), you're basking in your man's affection, but do try to not be smug. Instead, let your happiness work for others--shop for a sick neighbor, or cheer your grandmother with a surprise phone call. Tell the man in your life how smart and sexy you think he is. Such good Samaritan acts will leave Pisces even more content.

Happy Fourth

I have been singing this song in my head all day long.

We drove the car to the top of the parking ramp,
Fourth of July
We sat out on the hood, a couple of warm beers and watched the fireworks explode in the sky
And there was an exodus of birds from the trees
Cause they didn't know we were only pretending.
And the people all looked up and looked pleased
And the birds flew around like the whole world was ending.
And I, I don't think war is noble and I don't like to think love is like war.
But I got a big, hot cherry bomb and I wanna slip it through the mail slot of your front door.
Now you can't leave me here.
I got your back now you better have mine
But you say the coast is clear.
But you say that all the time.

So many sheep I quit counting
Sleepless and embarrassed about the way that I feel
Trying to make molehills out of mountains,
Building base camp at the bottom of a really big deal.
And did I ever tell you how I stopped eating
when you stopped calling me?
And I was cramped up, shitting rivers for weeks and pretending I was finally free

Now you can't leave me here.
Now that you're back you better stay this time
Cause you said the coast is clear
But you say that all the time

We drove the car to the top of the parking ramp
Fourth of July
I planted my dusty boots on the bumper
Sat out on the hood
And looked up at the sky.

Holy shit...

The director of Pink Floyd's The Wall (movie) used real skinheads.

Real. Skinheads.

350 skinheads.

Real skinheads beating up a black man and raping a black woman (those weren't really done, but the director said he wondered just how much was reality and how much wasn't)

That just blows my mind for some reason.

Ants

I have a hummingbird feeder on my patio that has attracted not hummingbirds, but a colony of ants. I love watching them. I have such a respect for them. Here they are, these little creatures, who risk their lives climbing up a wrought iron pole, then down a bulbed feeder, and into a flower hole where some drown. They climb up, then down, get hummingbird nectar, then back up the bulb and down the pole. Back and forth. Back and forth. All day long. And watching them follow the exact same path as the one before.

I can't imagine what I look like to them, a giant, sitting there and watching them, my huge face close to their tiny little bodies. Crossing the patio would be like me walking halfway across the city. Yet they keep going, standing back up after falling their equivalent of four stories or so, and getting the nectar.

They really are amazing little creatures.
